Newton, MA -- WPI tallied three unanswered second half goals,
including a pair from sophomore Nicole Maglione
(Charlton, MA), in a 4-1 season-opening road win Saturday afternoon
at Lasell.
The Engineers broke open a 1-1 tie at the half when Maglione
tallied an unassisted goal at 42:00. WPI added to its lead just
1:40 later when senior co-captain Jenelle Pope
(Sterling, MA) knocked home a goal off an assist from former
Wachusett Regional teammate Maggie Elbag (Rutland,
MA). The Crimson and Gray closed out the scoring when Maglione
found the back of the net for an unassisted goal at 56:37.
WPI scored the first goal of the match when freshman Kelly
Johnson (Buxton, ME) scored off a feed from Elbag at
21:43. Lasell tied the game with just over a minute remaining in
the first half on a Krysten Macisso (Westbrook,
ME) goal from Katie Bryer (Dresden, ME).
Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) picked the win in
goal for WPI, while making one save on the afternoon. Freshman
Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) did not allow a goal
while playing the final eight minutes for the Engineers.
WPI will continue its three-game season-opening road trip with a
date at Salve Regina on Tuesday at 4pm. The Lasers will play at
Fitchburg State at Wednesday at 4pm.
