Babson 1, WPI 0
Box Score
Babson Park , MA --- Junior Brittany Stevens
(Dudley, MA) scored the game-winning goal with 22:40 remaining in
the second half to propel the Babson College field hockey team to a
1-0 victory over visiting WPI in a New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. With
the win, the Beavers improved to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the
conference, while the Engineers fell to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in the
NEWMAC.
Neither team generated much offense in an evenly-played first
half, as Babson amassed just four shots, none of which were on
goal, while WPI mounted only three shots. The Engineers then
outshot Babson, 11-5, in the second half, but it was the Beavers
who would capitalize on a penalty corner with just under 23 minutes
remaining in regulation. After WPI goalie Mary Kate
Toomey (Worcester, MA) stopped a drive off a penalty
corner, senior co-captain Andrea Tufts (Wolfeboro, MA) corralled
the rebound and slid it to Stevens, who buried her sixth goal of
the season.
That would prove to be enough for junior goalie Soraya
Gallegos (Houston, TX) and the Babson defense, as the
Beavers kept WPI off the board the rest of the way. Gallegos
finished with nine saves in the contest, including seven in the
second half, while senior co-captain Heather
Dunbar (Hubbardston, MA) added her third defensive save of
the season.
Toomey finished with three saves in goal for WPI.
