Norton, MA ---The WPI men's swimming and diving team
opened its season by going 1-1 at the Wheaton double-duals on
Saturday afternoon. The Engineers defeated Gordon 196-45 but
fell to host Wheaton 141-129.
Freshman Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, CA) led
the way for the Engineers winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.78),
the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.78) and the 200-yard Individual
Medley (2:06.23). Freshman Lee
Chiang (Lexington, MA) captured the 50-yard and
100-yard freestyle's with times of 23.40 and 51.02,
respectively. Sophomore Steve Rose (Worcester, MA)
also finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.20), and third
in both the 100-yard freestyle (51.47) and 200 yard IM
(2:12.68).
The Crimson and Gray rounded out the meeting with an impressive
first place finish in the 200-freestyle relay team of Paul
Hesinga (Barnstable, MA), Bobby Medaglio
(Andover, MA), Tito Cruz (Hartford, CT), and
Bryan Bergeron (Poland, ME) (3:28.86).
WPI will continue its season with an away meet at Babson's
Morse Swimming Center on November 10. The first race will start at
1pm.
