Coast Guard 133, WPI 88
New London, CT ---The WPI Men's swimming and diving team
saw many strong performances, but came away with a 133-88 loss to
Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon.
Junior distance swimmer Dan White (Sidney, ME)
was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.11) while teammate
Robert Medaglio (Andover, MA) finished second with
his time of 5:48.45. WPI swept the 100-yard breaststroke,
with Chase Johnson (Eastham, MA) taking first
(1:08.92), Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) in second
(1:10.56) and Patrick Napier (Malden, MA) placing
third (1:28.56).
Second place finishes included White in the 1000-yard freestyle
(10:35.02), Chiang in the 50-yard freestyle (23.10) and
Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) in the 100-yard
freestyle (51.45). Freshman Mason Ruffing
(Stone Mountain, CA) took home third in the 200-yard freestyle
while Rose and Chiang earned third in the 1000-yard freestyle
(10:58.94) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.35), respectively.
Diver Paul Heslinga (Barnstable, MA) dove to first
place in the three meter event (112.86) while Ruffing, Johnson and
Chiang combined with David Keck (Orwigsburg, PA)
to finish second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:53.84).
Capping off the day for the Engineers was a first (3:39.48) and
second place (4:15.78) finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with
the first place team consisting of Rose, White, Tito
Cruz (Hartford, CT) and Minh Truong (West
Roxbury, MA) while the second squad included Heslinga, Napier,
Jeff Meyer (Denver, CO) and Bryan
Bergeron (Poland, ME).
Men's swimming diving is now 3-2 and will return to action on
December 1st when they compete at the two-day Wesleyan Invitational
beginning at 11am.
