WPI Baseball Ends Fort Myers Trip Defeating Carroll (WI) 18-5

WPI 18, Carroll (WI) 5

Box Score

Fort Myers, FL --- Senior Dan Mahoney (Troy, NY) (2-for-3, 3 RBI's) hit his second homerun of the season to help WPI to a 18-5 win over Carroll (WI)  in its final game of spring break action.  With the win the Engineers improve their record to 4-8 while Carroll falls to 0-1.

The Crimson and Gray got on the board early and often as Mahoney hit a dinger to right field to put WPI ahead 2-0.  Brandon Steacy (Framingham, MA) (5-for-6, 4 RBI's) pounded a RBI single to left field before Jon Quintero (Miami, FL) (1-for-1, 1 RBI) singled to left field to plate Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) (1-for-4, 2 runs scored) and give the Engineers a quick 4-0 lead.

Carroll would respond with one run in the bottom of the frame before WPI would bat around the order and attack for six more runs, and give themselves a commanding 10-1 lead in just the second inning.  The inning feature singles from Ethan Brown (Lunenburg, MA) (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT) (3-for-4, 2 RBI's), Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) (2-for-4), and Steacy.

Nine different WPI players combined for 19 hits as they scored in every inning of the game except the third.  Sophomore Ben Erle (Boylston, MA) added two hits to go along with a run scored and a RBI.

Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) earned his first win of the season for the Engineers, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned run on seven hits while fanning three.  Marc Chatterton (Fall River, MA) pitched the seventh inning as WPI won its fourth win of the young season.

WPI returns home and will open up its northern schedule on March 20th with a game versus Westfield State at 3:30pm.
