Fort Myers, FL --- Senior Dan Mahoney (Troy,
NY) (2-for-3, 3 RBI's) hit his second homerun of the season to help
WPI to a 18-5 win over Carroll (WI) in its final game of
spring break action. With the win the Engineers improve their
record to 4-8 while Carroll falls to 0-1.
The Crimson and Gray got on the board early and often as Mahoney
hit a dinger to right field to put WPI ahead 2-0.
Brandon Steacy (Framingham, MA) (5-for-6, 4 RBI's)
pounded a RBI single to left field before Jon
Quintero (Miami, FL) (1-for-1, 1 RBI) singled to left
field to plate Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA)
(1-for-4, 2 runs scored) and give the Engineers a quick 4-0 lead.
Carroll would respond with one run in the bottom of the frame
before WPI would bat around the order and attack for six more runs,
and give themselves a commanding 10-1 lead in just the second
inning. The inning feature singles from Ethan
Brown (Lunenburg, MA) (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Ryan
Rainone (Oakville, CT) (3-for-4, 2 RBI's), Cody
McGregor (Westfield, MA) (2-for-4), and Steacy.
Nine different WPI players combined for 19 hits as they scored
in every inning of the game except the third. Sophomore
Ben Erle (Boylston, MA) added two hits to go along
with a run scored and a RBI.
Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) earned his
first win of the season for the Engineers, pitching six innings
while giving up just one earned run on seven hits while fanning
three. Marc Chatterton (Fall River, MA)
pitched the seventh inning as WPI won its fourth win of the young
season.
WPI returns home and will open up its northern schedule on March
20th with a game versus Westfield State at 3:30pm.
