Worcester, MA - WPI rallied for five runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning to defeat Clark 5-4 in game one of a NEWMAC baseball
doubleheader on Saturday evening. Clark regrouped and came
out blazing in game two of the twin-bill to beat the Engineers 21-2
and improve to 7-10 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC action. With
the split WPI is now 6-10 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC play.
In the opener, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
second when Joseph Silva (Westbury, NY) singled to
lead off the inning before Nicholas Tapper
(Hopkinton, MA) plated him with a single to right field.
Clark doubled its advantage later in the inning when Tapper scored
on an Eric Dufour (Exeter, NH) single to center
field.
Clark pitcher Miles Whitlock (Augusta, ME)
(1-3) silenced the WPI bats until the bottom of the sixth inning
when they exploded for five runs on four hits. Freshman
Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) began the rally for
the Engineers when he smacked a triple to center field.
Galligan scored when Matt Fiore (Wakefield, MA)
grounded out to second base to set the score at 3-1. After a
pop up to record the inning's second out, Ryan
Rainone (Oakville, CT) singled through the left side
before Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) nailed a double
down the left field line to score him and cut the Cougar lead to
one (3-2). WPI would even the game at three all when Whitlock
hit Miller with bases loaded. Mark Dignum
(Albany, NY) finished off the Engineer attack when he poked a two
RBI single through the left side to give his team the 5-3
advantage.
The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when
Silva scored on a throwing error after hitting a triple to right
center to lead off the inning. That is as close as they would
come as WPI reliever Thomas Whiting (Farmington
Hills, ME) came in to strike out a pinch hitter to secure the 5-4
victory.
Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI) evens his record
at 2-2 the win for the Engineers as he pitched 6 2/3 innings,
allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six
batters.
In the nightcap, Clark pounded out an impressive 23 hits and
took advantage of nine WPI errors to earn a lopsided 21-2
victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning
highlighted by a Silva double to right center field. Clark
would add two more runs in the third and put the game out of reach
in the fifth when they scored seven runs on five hits to take a
12-1 lead.
Michael Levy (New Hyde Park, NY) was brilliant
on the mound for Clark as he fired seven innings while allowing
just two runs on three hits while fanning eight.
Jonathan Merritt (East Bridgewater, MA) and
David Gagnon (Harwich, MA) combined to pitch two
scoreless innings in relief of Levy.
Silva led the Clark attack going 5-for-7 with two RBI and three
runs scored while Kyle Breidenstine
(Shoemakersville, PA) was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs
scored. Pritchard and left fielder Cole
Osburn (Mendon, MA) each registered three RBI in the win.
Joe Walsh (Weymouth, MA), Rainone, and Miller
all recorded hits for the Engineers while pitcher Brendan
Devereaux (Holden, MA) drops to 2-2 on the season.
Clark is now 7-10 and will play host to Elms on Tuesday at 3pm
while WPI is 6-10 and will take on Springfield in a NEWMAC
doubleheader on Sunday at 1pm.
