Fort Myers, FL --- The WPI baseball team registered 14 hits en
route to a 7-4 victory over John Carroll in a spring break
match-up played at Terry Park on Sunday evening. The
Engineers are now 1-0 on the season while John Carroll dips to 0-2.
Freshman third baseman Mike Swanton (Foxboro,
MA) began his collegiate career with a bang as he registered three
hits while knocking in three runs, including the game winning
RBI. Sophomore left fielder Ethan Brown
(Lunenburg, MA) pounded out four hits and one run batted in.
Junior first baseman Ryan Rainone (Oakville,
CT) started the scoring for the Engineers when he scored on a
Swanton single up the middle in the fourth inning to tie the game,
1-1. WPI broke the game open in the fifth on another Swanton
single to bring in another two runs and put the Crimson and Gray
ahead for good.
Sophomore pitcher Connor Fahey (Cumberland,
RI), the returning NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, (1-0) picked up
the victory, working six innings and yielding just four hits while
fanning seven. Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury,
MA) threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of Fahey.
