Fort Myers, FL - John Carroll got the best of the WPI baseball
team as they swept the Engineers 3-1 and 11-10 in a doubleheader
Monday at Terry Park. WPI is now 1-2 while John Carroll evens
its record at 2-2.
In game one, freshman Cody McGregor (Westfield,
MA) recorded WPI's lone hit in the seventh inning when he poked the
ball through the right side of the field. The Engineer's run
was scored when right fielder Scott McNee
(Falmouth, MA) knocked in Matt Fiore (Wakefield,
MA) in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Pitcher Brian Duncan (West Suffield, CT)
pitched a strong game for the Engineers allowing just three runs on
nine hits while fanning one in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Engineers fell to John Carroll 11-10
despite a ten hit performance. Freshman Mark
Dignum (Albany, NY) led WPI as he went 2-for-2 with three
runs batted in and two runs scored. Ryan
Rainone (Oakville, CT) was 2-for-4 with three runs batted
in while James Kokolis (Manchester, NH) scored two
runs for the Crimson and Gray. Sophomore Ben Earle
(Boylston, MA) notched a key outfield assist to go along with a
base hit and a run scored.
WPI did not get on the board until the sixth inning when they
exploded for five runs to cut the John Carroll lead to 9-5.
The Blue Streaks added another two runs in the bottom of the frame
to go up 11-5 before the Engineers battled back to within one in
the bottom of the seventh on doubles from Rainone and
Dignum.
