Fort Myers, FL - The WPI baseball team pounded out twelve hits
en route to a 10-9 win over Hiram (OH) in spring training
action. Earlier in the day the Engineers just fell short in a
7-6 loss to Thiel (PA).
Versus Hiram, WPI battled back from an early 4-0 hole to knot
the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning when Paul
Galligan (Weymouth, MA) scored on a sacrifice fly from
Scott MacDonald (Gorham, ME). The Engineers
added runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-6
lead into the sixth inning. Brendan
Devereaux (Holden, MA) held off a potential Hiram rally as
he struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the WPI win and the
save.
Third baseman Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) led
the WPI attack going 3-for-5 at the plate while scoring two runs
and adding a run batted in. MacDonald went 2-for-3 to knock
in two runs and score two of his own while Matt
Fiore (Wakefield, MA) and Cody McGregor
(Westfield, MA) each accounted for one run and one run batted in.
In the loss to Thiel, the Crimson and Gray had another
productive performance at the plate, amassing ten hits in the
effort. Freshman Lyle Miller (Milford, CT)
led the offensive attack for WPI going 2-for-4 to bring in two
runs. Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT) was
2-for-4 with two runs and one run batted in while Mark
Dignum (Albany, NY) went 3-for-4 and scored a
run.
