Port Charlotte, FL --- The WPI baseball team had a tough
day on the diamond as they dropped a 7-5 decision to Loras (IA)
before falling to Bethany Lutheran (MN) 9-3 in the nightcap.
The Engineers tied the opener at 5-5 in the sixth inning when
Scott MacDonald (Gorham, ME) doubled to right
center to score Ethan Brown (Lunenburg, MA) who had walked to begin
the inning. That would be all the scoring for WPI as Loras
added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the
victory.
MacDonald finished with a 3-for-4 performance including a double
and one run batted in while teammate Scott McNee
(Falmouth, MA) was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and two runs
scored. Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) and
Matt Fiore (Wakefield, MA) each added two hits
apiece for the Crimson and Gray.
Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI) took the loss for
the Engineers, pitching seven innings while allowing six runs (five
earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
Despite putting up 13 hits on the board, WPI fell to Bethany
Lutheran 9-3 in its second game of the day. The Engineers did
not get on the board until the eighth inning when Chuck
Labbee (Northampton, MA) singled home Paul
Galligan (Weymouth, MA) to make the score 6-1. Fiore
and McGregor each tallied RBI's in the inning to cut the Viking
lead to 6-3, but the WPI rally would come up short.
Fiore was 3-for-5 with an RBI while McGregor was 2-for-5 with an
RBI. Pitcher Brian Duncan (West Suffield,
CT) absorbed the loss for WPI allowing 10 hits and six runs (five
earned) in seven innings of work.
