WPI 10, Brandeis 2
Box Score
Waltham, MA --- The visiting WPI baseball team scored five
unearned runs on five errors today to defeat the Brandeis
University Judges, 10-2, on Marcus field.
WPI (12-13) scored multiple runs in four different innings,
including two in the first and three in the third to open up a 5-0
lead. The Engineers scored on two Brandeis errors in the first,
while their third run also came on a miscue. Their first RBI came
on a two-run double in the third off the bat of senior DH
Dan Mahoney (Troy, NY). Senior catcher
Matt Fiore (Wakefield, MA) added an RBI two-bagger
of his own in the fifth to give WPI a 6-0 lead. A pair of
bases-loaded walks in the six put the visitors ahead, 8-0.
Brandeis (10-9) finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth
on an RBI ground out by rookie 1B Drake Livada
(Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Livada was safe on a WPI error, loading
the bases, but a sharply-hit ball by senior SS Zach
Golden was snared for a double play to end the threat.
Fiore was the top hitter on the day for WPI, going 4-5 with two
runs scored, a double and an RBI. Mahoney finished up 1-3 with
three RBI, a double and a run scored. Junior Brendan
Devereaux (Holden, MA) improved to 2-2 on the season with
six innings of five-hit ball. He struck out two and walked three,
allowing just one earned run.
Brandeis had one multiple hitter on the afternoon, senior RF
Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, NY), who was 2-3.
Senior RF Shane Butland (Columbus, OH) had the
Judges' other RBI. Sophomore James Collins
(Boston, MA) suffered the loss in just his second start of the
season to fall to 2-3.
The Judges are next in action tomorrow at Western New England
College at 4:00pm, while WPI hosts Salve Regina at 3:30pm.
