McDonough (Weymouth, MA) tossed a two-hit complete game
shutout and sophomore first baseman Nick Pecora
(Highland Park, NJ) equaled a school record with six hits as
Wheaton defeated host WPI 15-0 in NEWMAC baseball action on Friday
afternoon. With the win, the Lyons (22-8, 9-3 NEWMAC)
clinched their ninth consecutive regular season championship.
McDonough (4-1) was in control throughout the contest. He
fanned seven on the afternoon without allowing a walk. He
faced just two batters over the minimum and tossed only 84
pitches (64 strikes). McDonough recorded 14 outs on
groundballs, including three double plays, and needed his
outfielders for just one putout on the day.
Pecora tallied base hits in all six of his at-bats, tying the
school-record set by teammate Scott Guillerault
(South Portland, ME) last season versus Worcester State.
Pecora added four runs batted in while oddly enough, not scoring a
run in the contest.
The Lyons wasted not time, scoring five runs (four unearned) in
the top of the first. They added multiple runs in the fourth
and eighth innings while pounding out 20 hits on the day.
Shortstop Tim Leonard (Brockton, MA) scored
four runs while collecting a pair of hits and walking twice.
Catcher Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA) went 4-for-6
with two runs and two RBI while right fielder Robert
Foote (Walpole, MA) was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in
and two runs scored.
Junior Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) was
saddled with the loss for WPI (13-15, 6-4 NEWMAC). He is now
2-2 on the season. Lyle Miller (Milford, CT)
pitched well in relief for the Engineers, notching three strikeouts
in three innings of work. Ryan Rainone (Oakville,
CT) and Paul Galliagan (Weymouth, MA) collected
WPI's lone hits on the day.
Both teams return to the diamond with doubleheaders on Saturday
afternoon. WPI travels to New London, CT to face Coast Guard
while Wheaton is at Brandeis.
