WPI 2, MIT 1
Box Score
Worcester, MA - Senior Dan Mahoney (Troy, NY)
smashed a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning
to help lift host WPI to a 2-1 victory over MIT on Sunday
afternoon. The contest was a non-conference match-up between
the two NEWMAC members.
The game was a pitchers' dual from the start as MIT's
Stephen Toth (Walden, NY) and WPI's
Brendan Devereaux (Holden, MA) posted goose eggs
through the first six innings. The visitors found the
scoreboard first when with two outs in the seventh, DeRon
Brown (Galax, VA) plated Paul Groudas
(East Chapman, NY) with an RBI single just past the third baseman.
That seemed to be all that Toth would need as he retired the
side in the bottom of the seventh and got the first two hitters in
the eighth. Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA)
collected his third hit of the game and moved to second with his
second stolen base of the day. Then on a 2-2 pitch, Mahoney
launched his team-leading fourth homer of the season over the fence
in left field.
Devereaux scattered five hits, walked three and struck out four
in seven innings. Alex Hansen (Burlington, VT)
tossed a scoreless eighth to improve to 2-2 on the season while
classmate Thomas Whiting (Farmington Hills,
MI)pitched the ninth to earn his third save. WPI was aided in
the top of the ninth when catcher Matt Fiore
(Wakefield, MA) pickoff off a runner on first with one out.
Toth went the distance for MIT, surrendering just six hits and
three walks while collecting a pair of strikeouts. He is now
0-2 on the season.
Both teams have non-conference contests early this week before
opening up the NEWMAC Tournament with home games on Thursday.
WPI (16-15), the second seed in the tournament, will host Becker on
Tuesday at 4pm. MIT (10-11), the third seed will travel to
Waterville, ME on Monday for a game with Colby.
