WPI Baseball Defeats Becker 7-4

WPI 7, Becker 4

Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) laced a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to help WPI rally for a 7-4 victory over Becker in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win, the Engineers improve to 17-15 while Becker dips to 7-16.

WPI trailed 4-2 before erupting for a run in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth.  The Crimson and Gray sliced the lead to a run on McGregor's RBI groundout.  The Engineers produced the key seventh inning run without a hit or the ball leaving the infield.

In the eighth, WPI tied the game on a Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT) single to second.  After McGregor's heroics gave the Engineers a 6-4 lead, pinch hitter Lyle Miller (Milford, CT) added an RBI single to right center.

Alex Hansen (Burlington, CT) was strong out of the bullpen.  The freshman (3-2) picked up his second relief win in three days after allowing one hit and striking out four in 3 2/3 innings.

Both starters pitched well, especially Becker's Reed Metz (Hudson, FL).  Retz allowed just a pair of earned runs in six innings plus while his counterpart, WPI's Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA), yielded three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.  Eric Rock (Pittsfield, MA) absorbed the loss for the Hawks to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Becker was paced offensively by Jusuz Lopez (Manchester, CT), who smashed a solo homer run in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth.  Join Loper with a pair of hits for the Hawks were George Triantafillakos (Leominster, MA), Kevin Robinson (Pittsfield, MA) and Jake Russo (Sandwich, MA).

Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) and Paul Galliagan (Weymouth, MA) would notch multiple base hits for WPI while Ethan Brown (Leominster, MA) and Rainone would score twice.

WPI will return to action on Thursday with a single-elimination NEWMAC Tournament game.    The second-seeded Engineers will host seventh-seeded Coast Guard at 3:30pm with the winner advancing to this weekend's double elimination portion of the tournament.  Becker will host Keene State in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday at 4pm at Anna Maria.
