WPI 8, Nichols 1
Box Score
Worcester, MA - WPI registered five first-inning runs to help
freshman pitcher Alex Hansen (Burlington, CT)
pickup his first collegiate victory in a 8-1 win over visiting
Nichols in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. WPI
improves to 11-9 on the season while Nichols falls to 2-11.
Hanson scattered three hits over six innings while notching a pair
of strikeouts as he improved his record to 1-1. Fellow freshman
Jason Forte (Carlisle, MA) and Mike
Swanton (Foxboro, MA) combined to throw three scoreless
innings of relief, limiting the Bison to just one base runner over
the last three frames.
The Engineers would get all the offensive they would need in the
first inning when they posted five unearned runs off Nichols
starter Joseph Atchue (Grafton, MA) (0-1).
Freshman Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) and
Scott MacDonald (Gorham, ME) highlighted the
uprising by collecting RBI singles.
The Bison broke into the scoring column in the third inning when
Steve Tamagni's (Orange, CT) single plated
Cale LaCasse (Killingly, CT).
WPI answered back in the fifth inning when Dan
Mahoney (Troy, NY) and Cody McGregor
(Westfield, MA) notched back-to-back RBI doubles. The Engineers
would close out the scoring in the seventh when Lyle
Miller (Milford, CT) was hit by a pitch with the bases
loaded.
WPI returns to the diamond on Thursday with a key NEWMAC contest at
nationally ranked Wheaton. Both teams will enter the contest
sporting 3-1 records in league play. Nichols will next play on
Friday, when they travel to Eastern Nazarene for a CCC
doubleheader.
