Worcester MA --- The Worcester State College Lancer baseball
team scored 11 runs through the first four innings on their way to
defeating WPI Monday afternoon by the final tally of 15-4 at WPI's
Class of 1893 field. The Lancers pounded out 15 hits on the
day in getting back to the .500 mark with a 9-9 record. WPI
falls to 12-12 on the year.
Worcester State got on the board in the bottom of the first
inning. With one, out sophomore Billy Manley
(Lowell, MA) doubled to centerfield and junior first baseman
Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA) belted a monstrous
2-run homer over the left-centerfield fence. Junior
Chris Gusha (Rutland, MA) followed with a double
to left and was knocked in on an RBI single by catcher
Chris Logan (Spencer, MA). Freshman
Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA) doubled driving in
Logan to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.
Worcester State would plate two more in the bottom of the second
as Manley and designated hitter Kirk Monbleau
(Dracut, MA) each drove in single runs.
After a scoreless third inning, the Lancers plated 5 runs in the
bottom of the fourth inning with the big blow coming on a two-run
double by Gusha.
The Engineers would get on the board in the top of the sixth
inning. WPI posted their first run when sophomore
Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) scored from third base
on a wild pitch after leading the frame off with a walk. RBI
singles by freshmen Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) and
Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) finished the WPI
scoring in the inning.
The Lancer answered right back with 4 more runs in the bottom of
the sixth after wholesale WPI defensive changes. An RBI
single by junior Mike Moffett (Lowell, MA) and
double by centerfielder Tom Huddleston (Braintree,
MA) were the big hits in the inning for the Lancers.
WPI rounded out the scoring on the day scoring a single run on a
passed ball for the 15-4 final.
Worcester State senior Eric Grabowski
(Worcester, MA) went 5 strong innings for Worcester State in
picking up his second win of the season. Grabowski gave up
just 2 hits and struck out 6 on the day. WPI's Alex
Hansen (Burlington, CT) took the loss for the Engineers
and is now 1-2.
The two teams were orginally scheduled to play a doubleheader
beginning at 2:30pm but wet field conditions limited action to one
nine-inning game beginning at 4pm. The contest was
played at WPI with Worcester State as the home team. The two
teams will look to reschedule the second game, which was
already a remake from March 29th, later in the season
Worcester State will return to action on Thursday when they are
scheduled to host the nationally ranked Wheaton College
Lyons. WPI is scheduled to travel to Brandeis on Wednesday.
