Worcester, MA --- The WPI baseball team reached the 20-win total
for the first time in program history with a sweep of city rival
Worcester State in non-conference action on Thursday
afternoon. The Engineers took the opener 5-4 before winning
the nightcap 11-2.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Coner Fahey
(Cumberland, RI) fanned 10 and did not allow an earned run.
He went the distance in the seven-inning contest to improve to 5-3
on the year.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Matt
Fiore (Wakefield, MA) tied the game with an RBI single
before scoring what would prove to be the winning run. He
scored twice in the game and was the only player on either team
with multiple hits.
Pat Good (Hull, MA) absorbed the loss despite
pitching well for the Lancers. He allowed just two earned
runs while fanning a season-best four. Nate
Nelson (Worcester, MA) paced WSC offensively with a pair
of runs scored.
In the second game, Brian Duncan (West
Suffield, CT) did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work
as he upped his record to 4-2. He scattered six hits while
only walking one.
The Engineers gave Duncan plenty of support as they scored runs
in seven different innings of the nine-inning affair.
Ryan Rainone (Oakdale, CT) notched a pair of hits,
including the 100th of his career. Dan
Mahoney (Troy, NY) and Scott McNee
(Falmouth, MA) belted home runs for WPI while Fiore collected three
hits and Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) and
Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) each contributed a
pair of base hits.
Kirk Monbleau (Dracut, MA) and Nelson each
tallied two hits for Worcester in the night cap with Nelson
launching a tremendous home run, his 10th of the season, in the
eight inning.
WPI, who has won seven of its last eight games, is now 20-16 on
the season. They will close out regular season play on Friday
with a home doubleheader versus Framingham State at 2pm.
Worcester State, who saw its six game winning streak come to an
end, completes its season with a 16-21 record.
