Worcester, MA - The WPI baseball team continued to improve on
its record breaking season with a sweep of Framingham State in
non-conference action on Friday afternoon. The Engineers took
the opener 5-1 before winning the nightcap 6-3. WPI has won
five straight and nine of 10. The 22-16 record is the most
wins in program history.
In the opener, WPI broke open a 1-1 game with four runs on six
hits in the bottom of the sixth. Scott McNee
(Falmouth, MA) led off the inning with a double down the left field
line and scored just two batters later when Dan
Mahoney (Troy, NY) singled to left center.
Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA), Ethan
Brown (Lunenburg, MA) and Matt Fiore
(Wakefield, MA) all contributed RBI singles in the inning.
Casey Hickey (Lee, MA) and Ryan McCarthy (Shrewsbury, MA) each
had two hits in the game for Framingham while Brown led the way for
WPI with two RBI. Mahoney was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Brendan Devereaux (Holden, MA) upped his record
to 3-2 with the win as he pitched seven innings, allowing seven
hits while fanning two. Evan Beauvais (West Boylston, MA)
(1-6) took the loss for the Rams.
In game two, the Engineers scored three runs in the second and
fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning.
Framingham battled back for three runs in the seventh highlighted
by a double from Jon Kincaid (Braintree, MA). WPI would hold
on for the win as Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT),
Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) and Brown each notched a
pair of hits to lead the Engineers.
Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) earned the win for
the Engineers as he pitched five innings of scoreless
baseball. He allowed just four hits while striking out
five. Alex Hansen (Burlington, CT) fired the
last two innings for WPI, allowing three hits and three runs.
Sean Tupper (Marlboro, MA) (3-4) absorbed the loss for the Rams.
WPI awaits word on a possible ECAC Tournament berth.
