Worcester, MA --- Setter Marilisa Strand
(Sarasota, FL) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player as she
helped Assumption defeat Worcester State and WPI to capture the
2007 Worcester City Tournament. The freshman total 53 assists
in the two matches to go along with 10 kills in 11 attempts (1
error for a .818 hitting percentage).
The Greyhounds did not drop a game on the day as they defeated
Worcester State in the opening round and host WPI in the
championship game. It marks the fifth straight city
championship for Assumption and ninth in the 24-year history of the
event.
2007 marked a new format for the tournament as it was held over
just one day with the semifinals in the morning and consolation and
championship matches in the afternoon. Worcester State
bounced back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Clark 3-2 in the third
place match.
WPI took second place with a 3-1 win over Clark (30-24, 12-30,
30-24, 30-27) before falling to Division II Assumption 3-0 (30-24,
30-26, 30-17) in the championship game. Sophomore offensive
hitter Becca Holmerg (Madison, CT) paced the
attack for WPI as she registered 23 kills and 5 aces in the
tournament and junior setter Nikki Croteau
(Wilbraham, MA) chipped in with 50 assists. On defense senior
Kate Woodman (Fairfield, CT) tallied a team-high
42 digs, Holmberg added 40 digs, and junior offensive hitter
Kathryn Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) had 39 digs.
The Engineers (3-6) open on NEWMAC play on Tuesday with a road
match at Wheaton beginning at 7pm.
