Worcester, MA --- It was a great day in the pool for the men's
swimming and diving as the team combined to finish first in 12
of 19 events to place second overall with 358 points at
the Worcester City Meet held at Holy Cross.
Senior Jeff Meyer (Denver, CO) led the
outstanding WPI effort with three victories while Dan
White (Sidney, ME), Mason Ruffing (Stone
Mountain, CA) and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) all
picked up two wins apiece. Meyer set a meet record in the
200-yard breaststroke (2:13.81) and also finished on top in the 200
(2:00.47) and 400-yard (4:19.88) IM's. White was victorious
in the 500 (5:07.15) and 1650-yard (17:45.54) freestyles, Ruffing
in the 100-yard backstroke (55.71) and 200-yard butterfly
(1:59.94), and Chiang in the 50 (22.77) and 100 yard (50.05)
freestyles.
Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) picked up second
place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.91) while Chase
Johnson (Eastham, MA) and Alford Green
(Portmore, Jamaica) placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and
50-yard freestyle, respectively. Junior David
Keck (Orwigsburg, PA) took home third place in the 100
(55.94) and 200-yard (2:07.14) butterflies.
The WPI relay teams also met with success on Saturday as
Ruffing, Meyer, Keck and Chiang set two meet records and placed
first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:41.84) and 200-yard medley
relay (1:41.60). In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Rose,
Ruffing, Meyer and Chiang took second (1:30.84) before capping off
the day with the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay
(3:18.19).
Men's swimming will compete at Brandeis on Saturday beginning at
3:30pm.
