Worcester, MA --- Amira Tranchell (Falmouth,
MA) and Maritza Fair (Bronx, NY) combined for 37
kills to help lift Clark to an exciting 3-2 victory over host WPI
in NEWMAC volleyball action on Tuesday evening. Clark took
the match by scores of 25-22, 26-28, 28-13, 23-25, 15-11.
With the result, the Cougars up their record to 9-10 overall and
2-5 in NEWMAC play. The Engineers slip to 10-14 overall and
1-6 in NEWMAC action.
Tranchell led all players with 21 kills while Fair chipped in 17
kills and 11 digs. The Cougars, who took the first and third
sets, seized control of the fifth and deciding set when they scored
five straight points to turn a 5-4 edge into an insurmountable 10-5
advantage.
Setter Nichole Lopez (Alameda, CA) dished out a
match-best 56 assists while Kristin McGinty
(Gypsum, CO) added 11 kills. Emily Visone
(West Hempstead, NY) anchored the Cougar defensive effort with 20
digs while McGinty and Parker Edmonds (Fort Worth,
TX) smacked five and four blocks respectively.
Three different WPI players reached double digits in kills, led
by Kathryn Bomba (Chelmsford, MA), who tallied a
double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Becca
Holmberg (Madison, CT) and Christina
Grant (Mansfield, MA) smashed 12 and 10 kills respectively
for the Crimson and Gray while Grant paced WPI with three
blocks.
WPI setter Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA)
collected a season-high 49 assists while Joan
Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) aided the Engineer defense with
28 digs. Becca Mattern (Rockville, CT)
registered nine kills for the hosts, who received four key kills
from senior Sarah Artz (Spring Grove, IL), three
of which came late in the fourth
set.
Both teams return to the court on Thursday with non-conference
home matches. WPI entertains UMass Dartmouth while Clark
hosts Worcester State. Both contests are slated to start at
7pm.
