Babson Park, MA --- Babson College matched its
season-high scoring total with five goals as the Beavers defeated
visiting WPI, 5-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer match at Hartwell-Rogers Field on
Saturday afternoon. With their fifth consecutive victory, the
Beavers improved to 12-4-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference,
while WPI dropped to 7-7-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the NEWMAC.
First-year Billy Nickerson (Middleton, Mass.)
had a huge day on offense for Babson, scoring two goals and
assisting two others. Senior co-captain Tim Winn
(Sutton, MA) added his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the
victory, while first-year Max Walker (Newton, MA)
and junior Ryan Putman (Doylestown, PA) also
scored goals. First-year Peter Crowley (Lexington,
MA) finished with two saves in just over 83 minutes of action in
net for the Beavers, and senior co-captain Brendan
McNamara (Exeter, NH) added a tremendous goal-saving stop
on a wide open shot by Gray just eight minutes into the
contest.
Senior Jason Gray (Carver, MA) scored the lone
goal for WPI in the 75th minute, while sophomore keeper Kirk
Dragsbaek (Sherborn, MA) made six saves in net.
Winn gave Babson a 1-0 lead at the 27-minute mark, when he took
a nice lead pass from Nickerson and ripped a shot inside the right
post for his 11th of the year. Nickerson then netted back-to-back
scores at 33:47 and 38:05, as the Beavers took a 3-0 cushion into
the break.
Gray put WPI on the board when he converted consecutive feeds
from junior Tommy Zajac (Merrimack, NH) and
sophomore Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) at 74:13.
However, Babson would push its lead back to three when Walker
scored off a Nickerson pass at 78:24, and Putman capped off the 5-1
victory with the first goal of his collegiate career at 81:54.
