Worcester, MA --- Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT)
smashed 28 kills and recorded 11 digs to help lead the WPI women's
volleyball team to a pair of victories in a non-conference
tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers defeated Anna
Maria 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-9) in the opening match before taking a
3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-22) win over Elms. With the wins, the
Crimson and Gray improve to 8-9 overall.
In the opener versus Anna Maria, Holmberg paced WPI with an
impressive .452 hitting percentage and 14 kills. Setter
Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) tallied a game-best
26 assists while freshman Joan Porambo (Jim
Thorpe, PA) collected seven digs for the Crimson and Gray.
Brittany Langdeau (Wolcott, CT) led the way for
the AMCATS with 15 digs and 11 kills while teammate
Jacqueline Lahan (Westford, MA) recorded a
game-high nine digs.
Holmberg was fantastic in the victory over Elms. The
junior registered 14 kills and 11 digs, which were both
match-highs. Croteau posted 26 assists and smashed 11 service
aces while Porambo pitched in with ten digs for the
Engineers.
Jeanette Nunez (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) turned
in a strong game for Elms with 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks
while Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) dished out 22
assists while adding two blocks.
In the middle match, Nunez was outstanding as she notched 15
kills, five digs, one block and a service ace to help the Blazers
to a 3-0 win over Anna Maria (25-13, 25-17, 25-18). Teammate
Stacy Croteau (Agawam, MA) helped out with six
kills and five digs while Phillips handed out a robust 30 assists
with three service aces. Langdeau scooped up six digs for
Anna Maria while Marcia McCoy (Hudson, MA) had a
productive all-around game with three kills, one age and two
digs.
Elms is now 5-11 on the season while Anna Maria is 2-12.
WPI returns to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Smith at
7pm. Anna Maria will host Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday at 7pm
while Elms returns to action on Thursday when they entertain St.
Joseph (CT) at 7pm.
