Providence, RI - The Johnson & Wales University wrestling
team swept a tri-match with Oneonta State and WPI at the Harborside
Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. It marked the final
regular-season home match for senior All-Americans Bryan
Lenhardt (Gloucester, VA) and Jerome
Owens (Kettering, MD). Both wrestlers recorded a
pair of victories on the day, including a win by pin in just 0:55
for Lenhardt against WPI.
WPI opened the day with a 21-19 victory against Oneonta
State. In the next contest, host Johnson & Wales posted
an impressive 32-12 win over Oneonta. JWU wrapped up the day
with a 34-9 win over WPI.
In the opening contest, WPI jumped out to an early 15-3 lead,
including a win by junior Carl Anderson
(Billerica, MA) at 125 pounds. Oneonta responded by winning
the next three contests, two of them via pinfall, to take a 19-15
advantage. WPI cut the lead to 19-18 with a 7-3 win by senior
Scott Guzman (Acton, ME) at 197 pounds. In
the final match at 285 pounds, WPI sophomore Anthony
Corbo (Port Washington, NY) posted a 6-4 win to propel the
Engineers to the 21-19 victory.
JWU jumped out to an early lead against Oneonta in the second
contest of the day after a pair of major decision victory by
freshman James Soprano (Bellville, NJ) at 125
pounds, a pinfall win by sophomore 133 pounder Nicholas
Cucciniello (Smithtown, NY) and a major decision victory
by freshman Vincent Egloff (Cliffside Park, NJ) at
149 pounds gave the Wildcats the 20-3 advantage. Freshman 157
pounder Andrew Van Dyk (Ocean, NJ) and freshman
165 pounder Christopher Giannios (Brick, NJ)
recorded back-to-back victories to help stake JWU to a 26-3
advantage. The Wildcats then cruised to the 32-12 win.
In the final contest of the day, Johnson & Wales had a 10-3
win after a major decision victory by Egloff at 149 pounds.
WPI sophomore Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) cut the
lead to 10-9 after a win by pinfall at 157 pounds. The
Wildcats then had three straight wins via pinfall by Giannios,
Owens and Lenhardt to take the 28-9 lead. JWU then took the
34-9 victory.
Johnson & Wales is now 4-0 on the season, Oneonta State is
2-4 record while WPI is 3-2 for the year. The Wildcats will
return to action on Sunday, December 21st when they travel to Las
Vegas, Nevada for the Desert Duals. Action gets underway at
9:00 am. WPI is off until Wednesday, Janaury 7th when they
travel to Southern Maine.
