Middletown, CT --- Sophomore Mason Ruffing
(Stone Mountain, GA) tallied 120 points to finish as the top
overall swimmer at the two-day Wesleyan Invitational held on
Saturday and Sunday. The Engineers finished third with 767.5
points while host Wesleyan took the overall title with 1050 points.
Ruffing was victorious in six individual events and swam on
three winning relay teams. He won the 50-yard butterfly
(23.80), 200-yard IM (1:58.1), 100-yard butterfly (52.04), 100-yard
backstroke (53.96), 100-yard IM (54.33 - school record) and
200-yard butterfly (1:56.6). Classmate Lee
Chiang (Lexington, MA) was WPI's only other swimmer to
take home an individual win with his time of 21.67 in the 50-yard
freestyle. Chiang added a second place finish in the 100-yard
freestyle (48.11).
Freshman Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta, GA) grabbed
an array of second place finishes including the 50-yard backstroke
(25.92), 50-yard butterfly (23.81), 100-yard butterfly (52.49),
200-yard butterfly (1:58.3) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.2) before
finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke (55.93).
Lybarger's great day in the pool earned him 101 points to finish
third overall spot at the meet.
It was a strong day in relay action for the Crimson and Gray who
came away with three wins. Ruffing, Chiang, Lybarger and
David Keck (Orwigsburg, PA) teamed up to cross the
finish line first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:40.5) before
taking second in the 200-yard medley (1:39.9).
Chiang, Lybarger and Ruffing then combined with Alford
Green (Portmore, Jamaica) to win the 200-yard freestyle
relay (1:27.4) before pairing up with Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) to
swim to victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.5).
Wrapping up the relay events were Lybarger, Rose, Ruffing and
Dan White (Sidney, ME) who placed third in the
800-yard freestyle relay (7:27.8).
Men's Swimming and Diving, now 2-3, will return to the pool on
January 23rd when they compete at the two-day Worcester City
Championships at Holy Cross.
