Cambridge, MA --- Freshman Mason Ruffing (Stone
Mountain, CA) raced to a first place finish in the 200-yard
butterfly with his time of (1:53.61) and senior Jeff
Meyer (Denver, CO) fought to a third place in the
1650-yard freestyle to help the Engineers secure a fourth place
overall finish at the three-day NEWMAC Championships at MIT.
The Engineers scored 350 total points while Coast Guard was the
meet champion with 991 points.
Ruffing was WPI's lone swimmer to be named to the All-Conference
team for his victory in the 200-butterfly. He also reached
the provisional NCAA qualifying standard. Meyer finished the
1650 free in 16:07.21 while fellow distance swimmer Dan
White (Sidney, ME) placed eighth with his time of
17:13.62. Sophomore Patrick Napier (West
Roxbury, MA) picked up 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:52.38)
and Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica) claimed 13th
place in the 100-yard freestyle (48.92).
Capping off the meet for the Engineers was Meyer, Green, Ruffing
and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) with their fourth
place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.04).
Finishing behind them were Keck, White, Chase
Johnson (Eastham, MA) and Steve Rose
(Worcester, MA) with a time of 3:21.71 and 11th place finish.
Earlier meet highlights included Meyer's second place finish in
the 400-yard IM (4:09.76) and third place finish in the 500-yard
freestyle (4:39.95), Ruffing's third place finish in the 100-yard
butterfly (51.52) and fourth spot in the 200-yard IM (1:57.75),
David Keck (Orwigsburg, PA) and Alford
Green's (Portmore, Jamaica) 14th place tie in the 50-yard
freestyle (22.22) and Green's 13th finish in the 100-yard
freestyle.
The Engineer relay teams faired well at the meet, as the
200-yard freestyle team of Green, Keck, Rose and Johnson crossed
the finish line in fourth (1:29.29). Ruffing, Meyer, Keck and
Chiang combined to battle to a fourth place finish in the 400-yard
medley relay (3:31.11) before claiming fifth in the 200-yard medley
(1:37.06).
