Worcester, MA --- Rich Wingert (Hyde Park, MA)
and Larry Loomis (Plainfield, CT) each won all
four of their matches to lead WPI to a 3-1 record at the WPI
Wrestling "Super Quad" meet Saturday afternoon at WPI's Alumni
Gymnasium. The Engineers improve to 6-3 on the year.
Williams was the big winner of Saturday's event, going 4-0 on
the afternoon. WPI was second at 3-1, while Trinity was 1-2,
Southern Maine 1-3 and MIT 0-3 on the day.
Williams improves to 7-2-2, Southern Maine falls to 3-5 and MIT
drops to 0-5. Trinity is now 1-7 on the season.
The day's matches began with Williams defeating Trinity 35-17
and Southern Maine edging MIT by a final of 27-25.
In the second round of matches, WPI handed Trinity a 29-9 defeat
while Williams knocked off Southern Maine 34-15. Against Trinity,
the Engineers were paced by three Major Decision victories from
Wingert, Joe Vanni (Hamilton, MA) and Matt
Wainwright (North Attleboro, MA) along with a win by pin
for Scott Guzman (Acton, ME).
The most exciting match of the day for the Crimson and Gray came
in round three, with the Engineers' big men carrying the load en
route to a 27-20 win. Following a pin by USM's James
Lamarca (Kittery, ME) at 184 pounds, the match was knotted
at 20-20. Guzman contributed to another big WPI victory, winning by
Major Decision 14-6 to give WPI a four-point lead. Anthony
Corbo (Port Washington, NY) followed Guzman and recorded a
win to give the Engineers the final margin of victory over USM.
In other round three action, Williams darted past MIT 42-9.
The meet's fourth round featured a battle of the Engineers, as
WPI took down MIT by a 34-20 score on the shoulders of Wingert,
Vanni and Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) who each pinned
their opponent. On the other mat, Trinity recorded their first win
this season with a 29-17 victory over Southern Maine.
The final match of the day featured the two teams who were
unbeaten on the day, WPI and Williams. Despite Loomis and Wingert
each recording their fourth victories on the day against the Ephs,
Williams lived up to their #1 ranking in the latest New England
Wrestling Association poll, defeating WPI by a 35-9 score.
James McCarthy (Marion, MA), Dylan
Rittenberg (Binghamton, NY) and Ethan
Cohen (Columbia, MD) each registered pins against the
Engineers.
In addition to Wingert and Loomis for WPI, Williams' Cohen,
Carl Breitenstein (Delanson, NY) and Ryan
Malo (Georgetown, MA) each won all four of their matches
on the afternoon.
WPI will be back in action this Wednesday January 14th at home
against Rhode Island College.
