Worcester, MA --- Ayo Iwuahwu (Lagos, Nigeria)
collected a goal with just 29 seconds remaining in the second
overtime to propel visiting Babson to a dramatic 2-1 victory over
WPI in NEWMAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The
win gives the Beavers at least a share of the NEWMAC regular season
title and the number one seed in the conference tournament early
next month.
Iwuahwu provided the heroics when he took a pass from
Dan Fogarty (Brookline, NH) as he was colliding
with the WPI goalkeeper. The ball continued into the net for
the freshman's sixth goal of the season. The helper was
Fogarty's 34th assist of his career, tying Dan Pucci
'98 and Jonah Frisch '03 for the all-time
Babson record.
WPI had opened the scoring with a goal just seven seconds
before halftime. Reserve Keeon Tabrizi (Harvard,
MA) notched his first goal of the year when he knocked home a pass
by Michael Solano (Corning, NY) following a long
throw in by Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, MA).
Babson, ranked tenth in this week's initial NCAA New England
Division III rankings, rallied from the 1-0 deficit when
Max Walker (Newton, MA) found Eric
Anderson (Scituate, MA) with a nifty one-touch pass, who
crossed to a streaking Edson Silva (Brockton, MA),
who buried the shot for his second goal of the year.
Peter Crowley (Lexington, MA) tallied one save
to earn the win in net for Babson. Paul Moan
(Watertown, MA) made five stops for the Engineers, who received a
key clear off the line by Matt Wzorek (Southwick,
MA) midway through the second half.
On the day, the Beavers enjoyed a 13-8 edge in shots and a 8-6
advantage in corner kicks.
WPI (9-4-1, 2-2-1 NEWMAC) is off until Wednesday when they
travel to Westfield State for a 7pm matchup versus the Owls.
Babson (11-5-1, 5-0 NEWMAC) returns to the field on Sunday, hosting
Plymouth State at 1pm.
