Norton, MA --- Junior Mason Ruffing (Stone
Mountain, GA) and sophomore Andrew Lybarger
(Atlanta, GA) each won an individual event and added a relay
victory to lead WPI to a tri-meet split with Brandeis and
Wheaton at Wheaton on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers won
three of the meet's 16 events while adding nine second and seven
third place finishes.
Ruffing took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (55.77), while
Lybarger took home first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.63). The
pair teamed up with Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) and
Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) to win the 400-yard
freestyle medley relay in 3:21.60. Lybarger also added second place
finishes in both the 200-yard (2:01.80) and 100-yard (54.69)
butterfly, and Chiang picked up second place in the 200-yard
freestyle (1:50.62) and 50-yard freestyle (22.47).
Spazzarini was third in the 100-yard backstroke (57.94) and
200-yard IM (2:09.78) and second in the 500-yard freestyle
(5:07.97), while Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) was
third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.55) and 100-yard freestyle
(51.61). Carl Curran (Keene, NH) was WPI's top
finisher in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking third-place in
10:51.18. He also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.65)
Ruffing and Rose combined with Rob Cakounes
(Chelmsford, MA) and Alford Green (Portmore,
Jamaica) for a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay
(1:46.37). Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME) wrapped
up a second-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing
in 1:08.64. Dave Cancel (Chicopee, MA) had a good
showing in the diving events, taking home second place in both the
one meter (145.95) and three meter (140.25) dives.
Men's Swimming and Diving will get back into the pool on
Saturday when they travel to take on Keene State at 1pm.
