Middletown, CT --- Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta,
GA) and Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) had an
excellent weekend in the pool, combining for 15 first-place
finishes to lead WPI to a third-place showing at the two-day
Wesleyan Invitational held this Saturday and Sunday. The Engineers
finished with 1,079.5 points, while Hamilton was the overall event
winner with 1,195 points.
Lybarger swam to four individual event wins and on four winning
relay teams. The sophomore won the 50-yard butterfly (23.52),
100-yard butterfly (51.96), 100-yard backstroke (54.81) and
200-yard butterfly (1:54.49). Spazzarini also strung together
several wins, taking first place in the 500-yard freestyle
(4:50.39), 400-yard IM (4:15.71) and 200-yard backstroke (1:58.20)
while also participating on three relay winners. Spazzarini was
also second to Lybarger in the 100-yard backstroke (55.23) while
Lybarger was runner-up to Spazzarini in the 200-yard backstroke
(2:02.20).
Spazzarini also grabbed a pair of third-place finishes in the
200-yard IM (2:01.85) and 200-yard butterfly (2:03.06) and Lybarger
also picked up third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.09).
Aside from their individual achievements, the pair contributed
to a very successful weekend for the WPI relays. The 200-yard
freestyle relay team of Lee Chiang (Lexington,
MA), Lybarger, Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica)
and Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) took first place in
1:27.89. Spazzarini, Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor,
ME), Lybarger and Chiang combined for a win in the 400-yard medley
relay (3:38.62), while Spazzarini, Lybarger, Chiang and Rob
Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA) earned the win in the 200-yard
medley relay (1:39.74). Spazzarini, Chiang, Rose and Lybarger
combined to win the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:15.08, while
Chiang, Rose, Green and Lybarger won the 400-yard freestyle relay
as well (3:14.77).
Chiang and Green also had good showings in the individual
events, with Chiang winning the 50-yard freestyle (21.78) and
coming in second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.59). Green earned a
third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (48.59). James
Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) won the 50-yard backstroke,
finishing in 26.19.
Men's Swimming and Diving will return to the pool on January
22nd when they compete at the two-day Worcester City Championships
at Holy Cross.
