Norton, MA --- Men's Swimming and Diving began competition at
the three-day NEWMAC Championships on Friday afternoon. It
was a strong day for the Crimson and Gray, as the
team established three new school records. After
five events, the Engineers are in fourth place overall with 118
points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay combination of David
Keck (Orwigsburg, PA), Andrew Lybarger
(Atlanta, GA), Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica)
and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) swam to a school
record in the preliminaries with a 1:26.64 mark and improved upon
that in the finals (1:24.81) finish fourth. The WPI B team of
Steve Rose (Worcester, MA), Minh
Truong (West Roxbury, MA), Green and
Carl Curran (Keene, NH) placed 11th (1:30.76).
Dan White (Sidney, ME) touched the wall in
4:55.6 to finish 15th in the 500-yard freestyle while Curran was
17th (4:57.5). Teammate Mason Ruffing (Stone
Mountain, GA) registered a school record time of 1:56.05 to finish
third in the 200-yard IM with Mike Boucher (East
Lyme, CT) placing 27th (2:15.8).
WPI saw two athletes place in the 50-yard freestyle - Chiang who
set a new school record with a 21.31 mark and fifth place finish,
and Keck who swam to 15th (22.21).
Closing out the evening for the Engineers were Ruffing,
Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Lybarger and Chiang
who teamed up to take home third (3:32.89) in the 400-yard medley
relay and Rose, Truong, Keck and Green who placed 12th (3:45.21) in
the event.
Action resumes tomorrow with the preliminaries at 11am with the
finals to follow at 6:30pm.
