Norton, MA --- Men's Swimming and Diving saw several strong
performances, including a new school record, to help the Engineers
to remain in fourth place (244 points) overall at the NEWMAC
Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet, hosted by
Wheaton, will conclude tomorrow evening.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Mason Ruffing
(Stone Mountain, GA), Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford,
MA), Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta, GA) and Lee
Chiang (Lexington, MA) finished in 1:36.26 which was good
enough for fourth place and a new school record while the
combination of Haroldo Kawakami (Tokyo, Japan),
Minh Truong (West Roxbury, MA), David
Keck (Orwigsburg, PA) and Alford Green
(Portmore, Jamaica) placed 12th (1:42.25).
The 100 yard butterfly was flooded with Engineer swimmers as
Lybarger swam to an impressive fifth place spot (51.32) while
Ruffing and Keck placed sixth (51.69) and 13th (52.87) ,
respectively. Lybarger's excellent morning swim in the 100
butterfly earned him a NCAA provisional qualifier in the event.
Green and Cakounes also competed in the 100 butterfly - Green
finishing 20th (54.46) and Cakounes 24th (55.46). Cakounes
later added the 12th (1:01.79) spot in the 100 yard breaststroke
placing ahead of Truong (22nd; 1:06.7) and Mike
Boucher (East Lyme, CT) (26th; 1:07.36).
Carl Curran (Keene, NH) motored to 12th place
in the 400 yard IM with a 4:27.39 finish with teammate Nick
Workman (Oakland, ME) in 22nd place (5:12.56).
Chiang registered a time of 1:45.53 to place 12th in the 200 yard
freestyle while Worcester native Steve Rose placed
23rd (1:49.7). Diver Conn Dickson
(Woodstock, MD) tallied 252.15 points to take 14th in the one meter
diving event.
In the 800 meter freestyle relay, Boucher, Bobby
Medaglio (Andover, MA), Workman and Kawakami united to
record a 8:02.25 finish which was good enough to place 13th.
Wrapping up day two of competition were Lybarger who corralled
fifth place (53.28) in the 100 yard backstroke and Kawakami who
posted a 1:02.77 finish to place 23rd in the event.
WPI Men's Swimming and Diving returns to the pool tomorrow
morning. Preliminaries are set to begin at 11am with the
finals to be swum at 6:30pm.
