Lybarger Leads Men's Swimming to Fourth Place Finish at NEWMAC Championships

Norton, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta, GA) shaved nearly two seconds off of his morning swim to set a WPI school record in the 200 yard butterfly.  Lybarger's 1:52.84 finish earned him the victory and made him an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 200-fly. Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) also was a NCAA provisional qualifier, finishing in third. The Engineers finished the meet in fourth place with 365 points while MIT was the champion with 1030 points.

WPI held a slim three point advantage over fifth place Wheaton (325-322) headed into the meet's final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay.  Ruffing, Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA), Lybarger and Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica) combined to finish fourth (3:10.23) and secure fourth place overall for the Crimson and Gray.

Ruffing finished in third behind Lybarger in the 200 butterfly and his 1:54.35 mark was also a NCAA provisional qualifier while David Keck (Orwigsburg, PA) raced to eighth place (2:00.74).  Also placing in the event for the Engineers were Dan White (Sidney, ME) (19th; (2:11.17) and Bobby Medaglio (Andover, MA) (21st; 2:12.71).  

White also corralled 10th (17:11.13) in the 1650 yard freestyle while teammates Carl Curran (Keene, NH), Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH), Haroldo Kawakami (Tokyo, Japan), Medaglio and Nick Workman placed 14th (17:35.09), 18th (17:56.01), 23rd (18:58.09), 24th (18:58.26) and 26th (19:53.26), respectively.  Kawakami also placed 23rd (2:14.43) in the 200 yard backstroke.

Chiang posted a 47.91 finish to take 14th in the 100 yard freestyle with Green placing 18th (49.07) and Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) 19th (49.18).  Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA) touched the wall in 2:17.16 to finish 11th in the 200 yard breaststroke while Mike Boucher (East Lyme, CT) and Minh Truong (West Roxbury, MA) placed 22nd (2:29.18) and 24th (2:29.18), respectively.  Conn Dickson (Woodstock, MD) amassed 246.05 points to dive to tenth place in the three meter event.
