Leicester, MA --- The combination of Maggie
Wigley (Bridgewater, MA), Celena Dopart
(Washington, DC) and Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME)
combined for a pair of second half goals off of penalty
corners to help spark WPI to a 2-0 victory over host Becker in
non-conference field hockey action on Thursday
afternoon. The Engineers, the winners of three
straight, see their record improve to 5-1 while the Hawks
dip to 1-5.
The Crimson and Gray scored their first goal 41:45 into the
contest, when Johnson blasted a shot from ten yards out into the
left corner of the net following an insertion from Wigley and
a stick stop by Dopart. The trio connected again in similar
fashion with just over four minutes in regulation after
Johnson buried a shot from just outside the ten yard line.
The senior now has two goals this season and 13 in her
standout career.
Senior goalie Allie Griffin (Billerica, MA)
finished with one save for WPI en route to picking up her
fourth shutout of the season. Nakita
Gosselin (Springfield, VT) made eight saves in a losing
effort for the Hawks.
WPI is off until Tuesday at 7pm, when they close out a
three-game road trip with a match at city rival Worcester
State. Becker opens NECC play on Saturday with a 11am home
against versus Elms.
