Worcester, MA --- Paige Hanson (East
Hartford, CT) and Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA)
each tallied a goal as WPI shut out visiting Lasell 2-0 in
non-conference college field hockey action Saturday
afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-0 while
the Lasers drop to 0-1.
The first half came and went without a score, but the action
came quickly after the intermission as Hanson scored off an assist
from Celena Dopart (Washington, DC) just 45
seconds into the second stanza. Wigley added to the lead as
she notched her first collegiate goal on a feed from Meghan
Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) with just over four minutes
remaining in the game.
Goalkeeper Elizabeth Ray (Simsbury, CT)
recorded six saves en route to posting her first victory of the
year and sixth career shutout. The senior came up big when she
stopped a breakaway with 15 minutes remaining and the Engineers
holding a 1-0 lead. Lasell netminder Christine
Thornton (Canton, MA) was stellar in between the pipes,
deflecting 12 shots for the Lasers.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 4pm. The Engineers
visit Bridgewater State for their first away game of the year while
the Lasers travel to MIT.
