Worcester, MA --- Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT)
and Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) teamed up for 28
points to lift WPI to its first NEWMAC win of the year with a 68-53
triumph over visiting Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. With
the victory, the Engineers, the six-time defending conference
champions up their record to 12-3 (1-2 NEWMAC). Coast Guard
dips to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in conference
action.
The Engineers used a 16-0 run over a 6:04 span midway through
the first half to turn a 10-10 tie into a 26-10 advantage.
The Crimson and Gray did it with their defense, producing seven
turnovers and holding the visitors to 0-for-3 shooting from the
floor during the spurt. WPI parlayed 12 Coast Guard first
half turnovers into 15 points and took a 38-23 lead into the locker
room at the break.
WPI, who never saw its second half advantage slip to single digits,
led by as many as 23 at 57-34 with 7:27 left, but the Bears made a
late run cutting the lead to ten at 64-54 with 1:45 left.
Robinson paced the WPI effort with 13 of his team-best 16 points
in the first half. The junior connected on all five of his
shots from field during the first stanza, including a pair of
3-pointers.
Perez added 12 points and six rebounds from the Engineers, who
received nine points and game-highs of four assists and three
steals from point guard Kyle Nadeau (Webster,
MA). Sophomore forward Jerome Stewart
(Bloomfield, CT), who was making just his second start of the
season, added eight points and six boards for the
hosts.
Junior Brett Huntley (Massena, NY) led Coast
Guard and tied a season-high with 16 points off the bench on 6-of-8
shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, while junior
Jevon James (St. Thomas, VI) had seven points, 10
rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.
WPI, which beat Coast Guard for the seventh straight time in the
regular season, shot 35.8 percent from the field (24-67)
while making three of 16 from 3-point range. The Bears shot
37.3 percent from the floor (19-51) and connected on eight of 25
from behind 3-point range.
WPI heads on the road on Tuesday for the first of three straight
away contests. The Engineers head down Park Ave. to take on
city rival Clark. The game can be seen locally on TV Charter
3 beginning at 7pm. Coast Guard closes out a brief two-game
road trip Wednesday at 7pm when they venture to Wheaton.
