Relays Power Men's Swimming and Diving to Worcester City Meet Title

Worcester, MA --- Men's Swimming and Diving won three relay events and featured four individual event winners en route to 367 points and back-to-back Worcester City Meet titles Friday and Saturday at Holy Cross. The hosts finished in second place overall with 348 points, while Clark was third with 342. The title marks the fifth overall for the Engineers in the nine-year history of the tournament.

WPI set the tone for its success early in the meet. In the first event of the tournament, WPI's 400-yard medley relay team of Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA), Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta, GA) and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) raced to a win in 3:45.46. The quartet also took third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.54). Chiang, Ruffing and Lybarger then combined with Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) to earn the victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.08), while Ruffing, Rose, Chiang and Lybarger swam to the win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.18).

Lybarger also added two individual event wins to his three relay wins. The sophomore won the 100-yard (53.28) and 200-yard butterflies (2:03.05) in addition to a second-place result in the 100-yard backstroke (56.83).

Ruffing and Chiang also each picked up individual wins for the Crimson and Gray. Ruffing took home top honors in the 200-yard IM (2:07.22) while adding a second-place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.27) and a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:39.86). Chiang was the top man in the 100-yard freestyle (49.53) and was second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.94) and the 50-yard freestyle (22.63).

Carl Curran (Keene, NH) turned in strong performances in the long-distance events for the Crimson and Gray, earning second-place in both the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:22.62) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.73). Rose contributed a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (51.48), while diver Dave Cancel (Chicopee, MA) was third in the one-meter (319.30) and three-meter (301.60) dives.

Men's Swimming and Diving will return to the pool on Thursday when they head out on the road to take on UMass Dartmouth at 6:30pm.
