Springfield, MA --- The WPI wrestling team placed 14th at the
New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Team Duals on Sunday
afternoon. The Engineers went 1-3 during the 15-team event
and are now 2-13 on the season. Top-seeded Williams took the
title with a 34-12 victory over Johnson & Wales in the
championship match.
The Crimson and Gray opened the event with a 47-0 loss to
third-seeded Wesleyan before dropping a 24-14 decision to Western
New England. WPI broke in to the win column with a 31-18
victory over MIT. The win is the 499th victory in the history
of the storied program. The Engineers were defeated by Coast
Guard 49-6 in their final match of the day.
WPI racked up seven victories in the win over MIT.
Dave Cardenas (Framingham, MA) took a major
decision at 174 pounds while Dan Gilman
(Framingham, MA), Ken Adams (Wilmington, MA)
Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) took home wins at 125,
141 and 165 pounds respectively. The Boynton Hillers were
bolstered by forfeit wins by Carl Anderson
(Billerica, MA) at 125, Sean Donnelly
(Londonberry, NH) at 157 and Chris Spinelli
(Lynnfield, MA).
In the loss to Western New England, Alex
Pittera (Salem, MA) registered a pin at 141 pounds while
Howe posted a technical fall at his 157 pounds and Anderson won by
decision at 125. Anderson was also credited with a forfeit
victory in the loss to Coast Guard.
WPI is back in action next Saturday when they participate in the
NEWA-Metro Conference Duals at Williams. The Engineers will
face the College of New Jersey, Hunter (NY) and NYU. Action is
slated to start at noon.
