Men's Swimming's Season Closes with Fifth Place at NEWMACs

Norton, MA --- Men's Swimming and Diving wrapped up its participation at the three-day NEWMAC Championships as well as its 2009-2010 season on Sunday, finishing with 292 total points for fifth-place overall. MIT won its second straight NEWMAC title with 1,027 points.

Andrew Lybarger (Atlanta, GA) took home WPI's best individual performance on each of the three days of the meet, earning 10th in the 50-yard freestyle on Friday, fifth in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday and third in the 200-yard butterfly on Sunday. After earning an NCAA provisional qualifier on Saturday in the 100-fly, he did the same on Sunday in the 200-fly with his time of 1:54.06. Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) was 11th in the 200-fly (2:01.42) while Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) was 18th (2:08.64).

Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA) swam well in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 11th-place finish (2:19.06), with Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME) coming in 18th (2:23.16). Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) grabbed 12th in the 100-yard freestyle (47.97), while JP Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) took 15th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.07). Senior Dave Cancel (Chicopee, MA) was 15th in the three-meter dive, scoring 270.6 points.

WPI continued its success in the relays on Sunday, picking up a fourth-place result in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Chiang, Ruffing, Lybarger and Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) touched the wall with a time of 3:12.31, while the Engineers' relay of Nathan Lee (Bryan, TX), O'Brien, James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) and Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica) finished in 11th (3:19.58).

The Crimson and Gray also featured four entries in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) leading the way in 16th place (17:44.35), followed by Carl Curran (Keene, NH) in 20th (18:05.68). Duje Jelaska (Brookfield, CT) (18:18.19) and Haroldo Kawakami (Tokyo, Japan) (18:31.5) closed out their races in 23rd and 24th, respectively.
