Clark 122, WPI 119
Worcester, MA --- Andrew Lybarger
(Atlanta, GA) and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA)
combined to win five races but the effort fell just short as Men's
Swimming and Diving dropped a tough 122-119 decision at city-rival
Clark on Wednesday evening. With the result, the Engineers slipped
to 2-5 on the season.
WPI trailed 120-104 heading into the final race, needing to
sweep the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay to cap
the comeback win. WPI went 1-2 in the race, but Clark's 'A' relay
took third place for the decisive points and the team win. The team
of Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA), Lybarger,
Steve Rose (Worcester, MA) and Carl
Curran (Keene, NH) won in 1:31.72.
Lybarger would win two other races on the day for the Crimson
and Gray, while Curran added a win and a second-place finish.
Lybarger picked up wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.18) and the
100-yard butterfly (52.91), while Curran was victorious in the
1000-yard freestyle (10:45.44) and second in the 500-yard freestyle
(5:16.16). Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) was a few
seconds ahead of Curran to take the win in the 500-free (5:13.31).
Chiang also had an excellent day in the pool, taking top honors
in the 200-yard IM (2:09.16) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.48).
Rose followed up Chiang in the 100-free, finishing in 50.98.
Ruffing added two second-place finishes to WPI's total, finishing
runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:54.17) and the 100-yard
backstroke (56.60).
Men's Swimming and Diving will be home on Saturday for its next
meet, when it will take on Bridgewater State at Clark at 1pm.
