Worcester, MA --- Bailey Sarber (Westerly,
RI) and Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) earned
All-Tournament Team honors as they led WPI to a second place finish
in the Worcester City Tournament Sunday at Laska Gym on the campus
of Assumption. The Engineers, who are now 9-1, downed
Worcester State 3-0 in the opener before falling to Clark 3-0 in
the championship tilt.
The morning match saw the Engineers improve to 9-0 when they
handled Worcester State in straight sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-16)
. Sarber notched 11 kills and four digs, while Dorenfeld
recorded nine kills, four assists and 11 digs. Alyssa
Fidanza (Ellington, CT) contributed nine kills and
nine digs to the cause. Kim
Woodward (Clifton Park, NY) paced the Crimson and Gray
with 30 assists and Joan
Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) dug out 28 balls.
WPI stumbled in the afternoon session when they lost for the
first time in the 2010 campaign to Clark by scores of 23-25, 18-25,
17-25. Errors plagued the Engineers as they racked up 22 as a
team. Dorenfeld netted 15 digs, seven kills and four assists,
while All-Tournament teammate Sarber matched her earlier kill tally
of 11, and also had 10 digs. Porambo added 19 digs to her 30
digs in the first match for a total of 47. Leading in assists
was Woodward who compiled 26 for the match and 56 on the
day.
The Engineers face Clark again on Tuesday in Harrington
Auditorium as they begin conference play at 7pm.
