Second Half Barrage Helps Field Hockey Past Becker 5-1

Worcester, MA --- Danielle Antonellis (Duxbury, MA) notched a hat trick to lead WPI to a 5-1 victory over visiting Becker in a non-conference field hockey contest on a rainy Thursday evening at Alumni Field. The Engineers improve to 4-2 while the Hawks fall to 1-5 for the season.

Becker senior Carrie Ann Hart (Belfast, ME) tipped in a score on a 10-yard blast from fellow midfielder Victoria Sirchia (Goshen, CT) in the 13th minute to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.  WPI leveled the score at 1-1, despite playing a player short due to a yellow card, when senior forward Meghan Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) deposited a goal after a scrum in front of the net with just 15 seconds left before intermission.

As the rain continued in the second half, the WPI offense took over.  In the 50th minute Antonellis scored her first of the night on a penalty corner after an insertion from Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) and a stick stop by Celena Dopart (Washington, DC).  Less than three minutes later, Antonellis successfully converted a penalty stroke to put the hosts up 3-1.

Rookie Kathryn Roosa (Cotteskill, NY) got into the scoring act at 61:01 when she put back a rebound that had ricocheted off the post for her first career marker.  Antonellis completed the scoring and put a bow on her first collegiate hat trick with 2:10 left when she smashed home a corner after a Wigley insertion and a Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) stick stop.

Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) picked up the win in net for WPI, stopping one shot over the final 35 minutes of play.  Aly Caceres (Fall River, MA) made two saves in the first half for the Engineers.  Becker goalkeeper Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, NJ) stopped nine shots. while Carolyn Steinbeiser (Pembroke, NH) was credited with a defensive save for the Hawks.

The Engineers took 20 of the game's 24 shots and enjoyed a 18-1 advantage on penalty corners on the night.

WPI hosts Wheaton to begin NEWMAC conference play on Saturday at noon in middle game of a five-game homestand.  The Hawks are idle until next Thursday when they travel to Worcester State in a 7pm match.
