Babson Park, MA --- Sophomore Belinda
Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) led WPI with 13 kills on 28
errorless attempts for an impressive .464 hitting percentage as the
WPI Women's Volleyball team picked up its second New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the
season on Tuesday night, as the Engineers topped the host Babson
Beavers, 3-1, at Staake Gymnasium. With the win, WPI improved to
11-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while Babson fell to 5-7
overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.
WPI used a four-point run to erase a 23-21 deficit and earn a
25-23 win in the opening set. Sophomore Elyssa
Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) recorded a net-aided service
ace for the go-ahead point, and first-year Holly
Ganser (Seward, AK) recorded a block to clinch the
25-23 set victory. The two teams then traded lopsided wins in the
next two sets, with Babson winning the second, 25-15, and WPI
cruising in the third, 25-17, before the Engineers put the match
away with a dominating 25-13 win in set four, aided by an 11-2
opening run.
Dorenfield added 11 kills and 17 digs, while Junior Joan
Porambo (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) contributed a match-high 18
digs in the win for the Engineers. Junior setter Kim
Woodward (Clifton Park, N.Y.) chipped in with a
team-high 28 assists. Ganser made nine kills on 11 attempts
for a .545 hitting percentage.
Babson was led in defeat by junior Nina
Milovanovic (Belgrade, Serbia), who finished with 17 kills
and a .310 hitting percentage. Junior captain Meg
Flaherty (Hollis, NH) added 12 kills and five digs,
sophomore Kathleen Lynch (Quincy, MA) recorded a
match-high 42 assists, and junior Alexa Untermann
(Honolulu, HI) contributed seven kills and two aces. Sophomore
Cathy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT) had a solid night at
the net for the Beavers, amassing four total blocks while also
adding four kills.
WPI returns to Harrington Auditorium on Thursday night when they
host Becker in a non-conference match at 7pm.
