Newton, MA --- WPI sophomore forward Megan Read
(Wrentham, MA) scored three goals Friday afternoon in a 6-1
non-conference win over host Lasell College. The Engineer's
improve to 2-0 while the Lasers begin their season 0-1.
Junior forward Sasha
Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) opened the scoring for the
Engineers at 6:41 in the first half. Classmate Celena
Dopart (Washington, DC) was credited with the assist
for her second of the young season and twelfth of her career.
It wasn't until 23:09 for the second goal to see the back of the
net, when sophomore forward Maggie
Wigley (Bridgewater, MA) assisted on Read's first
score. The next two goals came from Read at 25:16 and
27:12. Read is credited with her first collegiate hat trick
and now has five career goals. Senior forward Meghan
Linskey (Bridgewater, MA) aided Read's second goal,
while junior midfielder Paige Hanson
(East Hartford, CT) and Wigley assisted on the third.
Both teams scored in the second half. The Engineers Dopart
scored with help from Marokhovsky at 37:20. Junior forward
Emily
Pearce (Avon, CT) netted her second goal in as many
matches this season at 61:43, while rookie midfielder Kathryn
Roosa (Cottekill, NY) earned her first collegiate
assist. The Lasers avoided a shutout when junior forward
Hannah Cebry (Burlington, CT) netted the lone
score at 65:02 with help from freshman forward Sam
Smithers (Yarmouth, MA).
Despite having six goals against, the Lasers junior keeper
Christine Thornton (Canton, MA) minded the net for
the whole 70 minutes making eight saves. The Engineer's
sophomore keeper Aly Caceres
(Fall River, MA) played the first half and earned the win, while
freshman Liz Dufresne
(Worcester, MA) made four saves in the second half. Junior
back Katye
Milligan (Skowhegan, ME) was credited with her second
defensive save of the year.
The Engineer's return to action Tuesday night when they host
Bridgewater State at 7pm. Lasell hosts MIT Tuesday afternoon at
4pm.
