Three Multiple Winners Lead Men's Swimming and Diving Past Regis

Worcester, MA --- Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, CA)  and Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA) each won a pair of individual events to lead WPI past Regis, 144-83, in a men's swimming and diving meet on Saturday afternoon at Clark. With the win, the Engineers move to 3-1, while the Pride slips to 4-5.

Cakounes began his day by winning the 1000-yard freestyle as he swam an 11:42.58 and later went on to take the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:19.91. Lybarger was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (22.16) and posted the best time in the 200-yard IM (2:04.21). Ruffing touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:50.47 and 100-yard butterfly with a 55.37 time.

In the first event of the day, Ruffing picked up a team win as he combined with Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA), Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica), and Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) to take the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.66 for the Crimson and Gray.  Catano and Chiang also picked up wins in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.19) and breaststroke (2:24.45), respectively.

Carl Curran (Keene, NH) finished the 500-yard freestyle in first with a 5:13.22, while Casey Hayes (Arundel, ME) scored a 124.9 in the one-meter dive.

The best time in the 200-yard freestyle relay was earned by the team of Ben Collins (Newbury, MA), Catano, Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Josh Chan (Northampton, MA) as they posted a 1:37.42.

Three Pride swam to the top spot in 100-yard events. Nick Yerzyk (West Hills, CA) won the backstroke as the breaststroke went to Stephen McGovern (Dorchester, MA). Djordie Mandic (Portland, ME) grabbed the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle.

Yerzyk, McGovern and Mandic combined for nine top three showings.

Other top finishers for Regis include Alex Caliendo (Windsor, CT) in the 200-yard freestyle (2nd, 2:26.31) and Darren Laforest (Roslindale, MA) in the 100-yard butterfly (3rd, 1:00.93).

Men's Swimming and Diving returns to action when they head to Wheaton for a 6pm dual-meet on Wednesday January 19th. Regis hosts Mount St. Mary's at 1pm on Sunday.
