Cambridge, MA --- Andrew Lybarger (Decatur, GA) swam to a third-place finish in an individual event and a relay as WPI Men's Swimming and Diving finished day two of the NEWMAC Championships in fifth spot on Saturday.  MIT leads the competition with 769 points as WPI is in fifth with 254 and is two points shy of fourth place.

Mason Ruffing (Stone Mountain, GA), Rob Cakounes (Chelmsford, MA), Lybarger and Lee Chiang (Lexington, MA) finished third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.64. The foursome of James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY), Carl Curran (Keene, NH), Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Alford Green (Portmore, Jamaica) followed in 14th place for the Engineers just under five seconds later (1:41.56).

The 100-yard butterfly saw three Crimson and Gray in the finals. Lybarger was 3rd (50.77), as Green (12th - 53.01) and Coffin (15th - 53.99) picked up points for the Engineers.

Curran went on to also finish ninth to win the consolation final in the 400-yard IM (4:18.09). Teammate Eric Spazzarini (Enfield, CT) touched the pad 12th with a 4:22.62 effort.

Ruffing turned in a seventh place time of 52.65 and Perez-Rogers registered a 54.49 for 11th in the 100-yard backstroke. Cakounes helped the Engineers with a 1:02.83 (16th) in the 100-yard backstroke.

Finishing 17th in the 200-yard freestyle was Chiang who swam a 1:46.36.

The final event of the second day of competition was the 800-yard freestyle relay. Curran, Khalil Badran (Beirut, Lebanon), Nick Catano (Goffstown, NH) and Spazzarini combined for a 7:21.02 for ninth and the quartet of Ben Collins (Newbury, MA), Cullen O'Brien (Bar Harbor, ME), Coffin and Tyler Faszewski (Hooksett, NH) finished 11th with a 7:31.46.

The three-day championship event concludes Sunday. Swimming trials begin at 11am with finals at 6pm.  The 3-meter diving trials begin at 1:30pm.
