Volleyball Beats Assumption but Falls to Clark at Worcester City Tournament

Worcester, MA --- Tournament MVP Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, MA) totaled 23 kills and 28 digs to help Clark successfully defend the Worcester City Volleyball Tournament title on Saturday at WPI.  Clark has won the last two crowns and three of the last four while today's championship helps the Cougars move into a tie with Assumption with nine overall titles. 


Championship Match - Clark 3, WPI 1

The Cougars of Clark University were victorious on Sunday in the Championship game of the 2011 Worcester City College Volleyball tournament, defeating the host Engineers of WPI, 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20). 

Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, MA) paced Clark with 11 kills, 14 digs and four total blocks against WPI. ToniMarie Illuzie (Manorville, NY) had ten kills. Rachel Spera (North Hollywoord, CA) had 23 assists and two service aces. Kortney Kelley (Barnstable, MA) had 23 digs. 

WPI was led by Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) with 15 kills and ten digs. Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) had 13 kills, five digs and two block assists. Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) had 11 kills and nine digs. Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) had eight kills and four total blocks. 

Clark's record now stands at 3-2 while WPI falls to 4-2. The Engineers will get a rematch as the play their next match this Tuesday, September 13 for a rematch at Clark University in a 7:00 PM contest.

Consolation Match - Assumption 3, Worcester State 0

The consolation game of the 2011 Worcester City Volleyball tournament saw the Greyhounds of Assumption College defeat the Lancers of Worcester State, 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-17). 

Assumption was led by Ann Donahue (Braintree, MA), who had 12 kills and an impressive .647 hitting percentage. Ryan Merle (Skaneateles, NY) had eight kills, three service aces and five total blocks. Kristin Flatekval (Mahwah, NJ) had 30 assists and five kills. 

For Worcester State, Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) had six kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) also had six kills. 

Assumption's record now stands at 4-3 while Worcester State is 2-5.

Semifinal Match #1 - WPI 3, Assumption 2

The opening game of the 2011 Worcester City College Volleyball tournaox ment saw host WPI rally to defeat the Greyhounds of Assumption College, 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 15-25, 25-15, 15-10). 

Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) led WPI with 14 kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Fidanza (Ellington, CT) had 12 kills and 14 digs. Elyssa Dorenfeld (Reading, MA) also contributed with 11 kills and 11 digs. 

For Assumption, Mary Johnston (Pearland, TX) came up strong with 19 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while Lauren Ostafin (Avon, CT) had 13 kills. 

Down two sets to one, WPI rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets. With the win, the Engineers reach the tournament championship game. WPI's record now stands at 4-1 while Assumption falls to 3-3. 

Both teams will play later in the day against Worcester State and Clark University, matchups to be announced after game two of the tournament.

For Worcester State, Kristin Koles (Billerica, MA) came up strong with seven kills and three digs, and Becky Lebel (Millbury, MA) had 22 digs. 

Clark's record stands at 2-2 while Worcester State's record falls to 2-4. With the win, the Cougars reach the tournament championship game to face host WPI, while Worcester State meets Assumption in the consolation game.
