Worcester, MA --- Katie Correia (Merrimack, NH) netted a pair of goals and seven other players recorded at least a point to help WPI shutout visiting Elms 5-0 in its field hockey season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers, winners of three straight close the year with a 8-10 record, while Elms, who plays next weekend in the NECC Tournament is now 7-11.
Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) opened the scoring at 9:04 when she redirected a great feed in the crease from Chelsea Cook (West Sayville, NY) for her fourth goal of the season. Senior Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) pushed the advantage to 2-0 when she fired home a rebound at 23:36 for her fourth marker of the year and 13th of her career.
WPI expanded its lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Correia posted goals at 37:03 and 47:34. The first goal came off a nifty feed by Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) while here second came courtesy of a cross off the stick of Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA). Correia sees her freshman season end with three goals
The Engineers closed out the scoring at 52:05 when Mercedes Kuzina (Concord, NH) redirected a ball from Stephanie Symecko (Ceder Knolls, NJ) for her second tally in as many games and here fourth of the season.
Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) and Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) each played a half in net for WPI. Dufresne was credited with the win while playing the first stanza while Puishys recorded the Engineers only save of the day in the second half.
Elms goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA) amassed 16 saves and became the program's all-time saves leader, surpassing Tammy Landon's '97 previous best mark of 752. Bonavita now has 768 saves in her standout career.
Emma Morgan (South Kingstown, RI) took the Blazers' lone shot on goal. Elms gears up next for the NECC Semifinals where it hosts a semifinal game next week..
Before the game five WPI players were honored on Senior Day including Read, Cook, Maggie Wigley (Bridgewater, MA), Becca Sharpe (Concord, NH) and Madison Shugrue (Worcester, MA), as well as manager Aly Caceres (Fall River, MA).
