Men's Swimming and Diving Upended in Coast Guard Tri-Meet with Providence

New London, CT --- The WPI men's swimming and diving squad traveled to Coast Guard Saturday for a double-dual with the hosts and Providence College. The Engineers were defeated in both meets, being outscored 191-105 against Coast Guard and 170-129 versus Providence. Coast Guard overpowered Providence 169.50-116.50 in the third contest.

Freshman Alex Powers (Glocester, RI) turned in the top Engineer finishes on the day, with second place in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.00) and 200-yard backstroke (2:00.91). Immediately following his performance in the 200-yard freestyle, Powers raced to fourth place in the 100-yard backstroke (57.43). He also swam the backstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay with teammates Tyler Greff (Lincoln Park, NJ), Mitch Lentz (Edina, MN), and Ben List (Bedford, MA). The foursome finished second in a time of 1:40.91.

Greff took third place in both breaststroke events, touching in 1:03.04 in the 100-yard and 2:20.06 in the 200-yard distance. He also earned fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.98). Sophomore Max Arnold (Charlton, MA) had several top finishes of his own, besting Greff for third place in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.88 after settling for fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.60). Arnold was the top Engineer in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking fourth place in 10:47.66.

Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) swam a personal best 2:03.20 to take third in the 200-yard butterfly, and then captured sixth place in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.43) and 200-yard individual medley (2:15.22). In the splash and dash 50-yard freestyle, List grabbed third place in 22.69, followed by Adam Trumbley (Prospect, CT) in sixth place (23.50).

Freshman Jessie Johnson (Westford, MA) scored well in the diving events, placing third on 3-meter (136.65) and fourth on one-meter (129.05). He was joined by three athletes making their diving debut for the Crimson and Gray. Juniors John Kilfoil (Bourne, MA) and Ed Lukowski (Auburn, NY), members of WPI's football team, earned fifth (124.25) and seventh (108.55) place on the 1-meter board, respectively. They then followed those performances up with fourth (101.68) and fifth place (93.60) on 3-meter. Freshman Ben Andrews (Bristol, CT) returned from a knee injury to secure sixth place in the 1-meter (115.05) event in his first collegiate diving competition.

WPI (2-3) is off until December 1st and 2nd when they participate in the Hamilton Invitational.
