Greff Sets Another Record for Men's Swimming and Diving

Worcester, MA --- For the second time in as many weeks, freshman Tyler Greff (Lincoln Park, NJ) established a new school record for WPI men's swimming and diving as the Engineers hosted the non-team scoring New England Invitational on Saturday afternoon.  After breaking the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke last weekend, Greff got his name on the record board again, this time in the 50-yard breaststroke. His winning time of 27.85 took .61 seconds off the old record.

Greff also swam a leg on several strong Engineer relays. The 200-yard medley relay of Alex Powers (Glocester, RI), Greff, Ben List (Bedford, MA), Mitch Lentz (Edina, MN) finished second in 1:40.11. The same quartet took second in the 100-yard medley relay (45.59) and third in the 400-yard medley relay (3:39.57). The 200-yard freestyle relay team of List, Lentz, Greff, Powers touched third in 1:29.34 while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA), Greff, Powers, and List took home sixth place (3:24.69).

Nick Houghton (Berkley, MA) raced to a second place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 4:24.63. Powers earned third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.34) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (56.21). James Perez-Rogers (Woodstock, NY) swam the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 26.64, good for third place. Lentz was third in the 50-yard breaststroke (28.66), and fifth in the 50-yard butterfly (25.02). Alex Tomanelli (Mansfield, CT) placed fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke (28.91) and Keith Gagnon (West Hartford, CT) was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.34).

The Engineers fared well in the sprints to finish off the meet. Lentz and Khalil Badran (Beirut, Lebanon) went 1-2 in the 25-yard freestyle with times of 10.56 and 10.72, respectively. Greff and Tomanelli finished second and third in the 25-yard breaststroke (12.69, 12.95). Powers, Lentz, and Joon-Ho Lee (Hampstead, NH) touched third, fourth, and fifth in the 25-yard backstroke (12.74, 12.75, 13.69). The 25-yard butterfly saw Perez-Rogers in fourth place (11.63) and Spencer Coffin (Poughkeepsie, NY) in sixth (12.07). WPI's two all-rookie 100-yard freestyle relays took fourth and fifth places, with the team of Greff, Jessie Johnson (Westford, MA), Powers, and Jon Decelle (Rumson, NJ) just out-touching Tomanelli, Nathan Hughes, Tommy Nuthmann (Hillsboro, OR), and Lentz, 42.25 to 42.29.

WPI heads on the road for its first away meet of the season next Saturday at Babson.
